Meet the Author
James Papalia is a passionate young historian, award-winning student leader, and accomplished author who is currently a fifth-grade student at Cedar Creek Elementary School in New Jersey. At just ten years old, James has already written and published four historical fiction books that transport readers into some of the most significant moments of the twentieth century: The Secret Beach, The Secret Drop, The Secret Trench, and his newest release, The Secret Portal: My Journey with General Eisenhower.
Through stories of friendship, courage, sacrifice, and adventure, James seeks to inspire young readers to explore history while honoring the men and women who served during World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. His books blend historical education with imaginative storytelling, making history accessible and exciting for readers of all ages.
James's love of history began at an early age and was nurtured by the stories of his family. He is especially inspired by his great-grandfather, Jim Mauro, a proud Korean War veteran, and his grandfather, Kenneth Thomas, a Silver Star–decorated Vietnam veteran who served twenty-five years in the United States Army. Their stories of service, sacrifice, and patriotism helped spark a lifelong fascination with military history and America's Greatest Generation.
Over the years, James has immersed himself in the historical community through participation in some of the nation's premier history events. He regularly attends World War II Weekend in Reading, Pennsylvania, and has participated in the D-Day at 80 Symposium at Gettysburg College, where he met Susan and David Eisenhower, prominent historians, military scholars, and several well-known History Channel personalities. He has also attended the Gettysburg Film Festival, where he had the opportunity to meet veterans, authors, filmmakers, and historians, including Robert Edsel, bestselling author of The Monuments Men.
In 2025, James was honored to serve as a featured speaker during the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Japan (V-J) Day celebration hosted by the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Battle of the Bulge Association. Before an audience that included fifteen World War II veterans and famed Rosie the Riveter Dorothy Trate, James shared his passion for preserving history, discussed his books, and read selected excerpts from his work. The experience reinforced his commitment to ensuring that the stories of the Greatest Generation are never forgotten.
James is a proud member of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Society and an honorary member of the SHAEF ETO Organization. He has been fortunate to receive encouragement and mentorship from many individuals within the historical community, including author, researcher, and podcast host Paul Cheall of the Fighting Through podcast. James is also an avid listener of History That Doesn't Suck and enjoys following historical discussions and educational podcasts that bring the past to life.
One of James's greatest inspirations is his friendship with Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Through their conversations and shared visits to Gettysburg, James has developed a deeper understanding of President Eisenhower's life, leadership, and legacy. That friendship helped inspire The Secret Portal: My Journey with General Eisenhower, a historical adventure that allows readers to travel alongside one of America's most respected leaders.
Outside of writing and history, James is a dedicated student-athlete. He plays football for Manasquan AYF and recently completed an undefeated 19-0 season with his Exit 98 AAU Basketball team, capturing the Central Jersey Championship. He is also a passionate fan of Princeton University Basketball, where he enjoys attending games with his friends Austin and Adelyn and his sisters, Emily and Ava. His favorite player is Blake Peters. James is also a devoted supporter of the United States Naval Academy and closely follows Midshipmen Hoke Smith and Eli Heidenreich.
At school, James is actively involved in the Math Club, Hero Club, Peer Leaders, and Fitness Club. He was selected to participate in a special peer-support program that pairs students with classmates who have special needs, an opportunity he considers one of his greatest honors. Whether helping classmates, cheering at school events, or spending time with friends at recess, James believes that kindness, inclusion, and service are among the most important qualities a person can possess.
Looking toward the future, James hopes to attend the United States Naval Academy and one day serve his country. Until then, he remains committed to his mission as a young author and historian: educating, inspiring, and preserving the stories of those who came before us. Through his writing, speaking engagements, and involvement in the historical community, James reminds readers of all ages that the values of honor, courage, service, and friendship continue to connect generations across time.
